Welcome to our Professional Advisors e-newsletter

Registered charity County Durham Foundation is the ideal vehicle for people who are looking to put something back into the communities in which they have lived and worked. Unlike other charities, we have the flexibility to support a wide range of good causes from children to the elderly, from the arts to the environment. Uniquely, we look to match the interests of our supporters with the needs of the community, and to offer donors a say in how their gift is used.

Our long-term endowment funds are perfect for legacies, as they
guarantee
how the money will be used. Support is given each year in the name of the fund and we manage all investment, accounting and legal requirements. This is the easiest, most effective way to ensure that your clients charitable bequests will support future generations.

Barbara and David Watson leave substantial legacy

Barbara and David Watson wanted to make a real difference to the next generation of people in County Durham and Darlington. They decided to work with County Durham Foundation to leave a residual legacy so that the majority of their estate will be used to help young people achieve success in music, drama and the arts; an area that they both care about deeply.

At first it was David’s idea to leave a legacy to the Foundation, but Barbara was persuaded when she visited a showcase celebratory weekend arranged as part of the Foundation's 10th Anniversary celebrations.  As she explained," We were bowled over by the range and quality of the people who received financial help from County Durham Foundation. The sheer hard work put in by local volunteers was astounding. We realised that we could achieve a lot, with the help of the Foundation, and that in the future perhaps our support may inspire a budding opera star, musician or actor to make the most of their talent." David adds, "We could not do this on our own, and we wanted the added security of knowing that our money would be in safe hands not just today but in 50 years time".

Educated in Sunderland, David enjoyed a successful career as an Accountant with both British Rail and then Northumbrian Water. His last role was as Company Secretary of the Northumbrian Water Group plc. Whilst with Northumbrian Water, David was introduced to the concept of community foundations. He quickly became a fan of the idea of people helping local good causes, ensuring that support goes to where it is needed most with the help of the professional staff at the Foundation. By setting up an endowment fund with their legacy, they will also guarantee that their wishes will be carried out just as they would wish long into the future.

Now retired, David and Barbara spend their time playing golf, swimming, travelling and participating in amateur dramatics whilst David has a particular interest in model railways.
