Wolsingham Cricket Club

Young Weardale cricketers wanting to follow in the footsteps of England’s Ashes-winning heroes have been given a helping hand by the Banks Community Fund.

Wolsingham Cricket Club is aiming to make the most of the sport’s recent revival with the help of an £8,700 grant from the Banks Community Fund; a grant for a new artificial wicket.

The club has 50 active members, and they work hard to integrate both youth members and girls in training sessions and mixed friendly games. The Wolsingham Cricket Team has been incredibly successful, winning the league and all four competitions they have entered in recent years. However they were in desperate need of a new artificial wicket to use in home games.

The surface of the pitch was unsafe and beyond repair. This was causing major set backs for the club as there are no other artificial pitches in the vicinity and four league competitions rely on their pitch. 250

Bruno Porter of Wolsingham Cricket Club, said:

“The artificial wicket will be used for all the club’s home fixtures and will play an essential part of our team training sessions. Our old pitch was in bad repair and proving extremely unreliable, so the new artificial wicket could not have come at a better time for the club.”

The new wicket will also be used by Wolsingham School and Community College for sports and recreational purposes through out the week, as well as staging the illustrious George Mann Cup, organised by Charlie Donaghy and hosted every year by the College.

Mark Dowdall, Divisional Director for Banks Developments, said:

“We are very pleased to have made this donation to Wolsingham Cricket Club. The club is a vital part of the local community involving a variety of sports men, women and children at different levels. We hope this new facility will encourage new members to join and encourage the club to stage further sporting events in Wolsingham."
