The Chinese Association North East

The Chinese Association aims to develop sustainable relationships between the Chinese and wider community at a local, national and international level. Current activities include a chinese school for children and parents and a social and welfare group for the elderly.

The elderly group of the Chinese Association has been meeting weekly since May 2002 at the Vane Tempest Community Centre to have lunch, socialise, exercise and take part in activities. The group also has visiting speakers and hopes to do ICT training, basic language training and health awareness classes as well as host some lifestyle and dietary discussions.  Over 30 Chinese people over the age of 60 come from all over the County, even as far afield as Newcastle and Middlesbrough in some cases.

The Chinese Association were given a grant of £400 to provide weekly lunches, courses and activities at Vane Tempest Community Centre. This has helped to fulfil a need for a community, which is often invisible and isolated, and help them to remain active.
