South Church Allotment Association

South Church Allotment The group was established in 2001 to promote gardening as a healthy leisure activity for both men and women of all ages within the South Church area of Bishop Auckland.  The emphasis is based on developing a community atmosphere where the local community can socialise and enjoy the gardens, also to develop the necessary skills to grow fruit, vegetables and flowers.

The group were given a grant of £1,184 to develop a community sensory garden.

The grant was used to create a sensory garden on a derelict unused allotment. With the help of volunteers, the garden is themed on noise, fragrance and touch and be accessible all year round.  The garden is used for holding shows, open days and fundraising events.

"With the help of the grant from County Durham Foundation the garden structure was achieved and plants chosen to stimulate senses. An area was created for children, which is peaceful and secure.  It is hoped this will attract visitors who may get interested in gardening.  On behalf of the Committee I would like to formally thank you for awarding this grant to our association."
