Red Badminton

Red Badminton Club posing with their new rackets

The Red Badminton Club is based at the Cockton Hill Junior School in Bishop Auckland. The clubs aim is to develop a badminton club for children of junior school age, so that they can become more active and enjoy a sport. Cockton Hill is based within the Wear Valley district and is classed within the top 10% most deprived areas in the UK. The club is run by a committee, one member of this committee having a vast experience of badminton coaching once being an ‘All England’ coach and umpire.

The Red Badminton Club was given £1988 to help buy everything from nets to rackets. Insurance and rental costs were also paid to make sure that the club will continue to be a success in the future.

The idea for the club came from the young children themselves, and has proved a great success. So much so, that a follow on club has been set up at the local comprehensive school, allowing juniors to mix with seniors and adults. Over 30 young people have benefited directly from the project.

“Thank you for the grant! Everyone at the club has enjoyed it”
