This Grant will be used to establish four bicycle repair and maintenance work stations, purchase specialist equipment and provide transport for members to visit various cycle tracks around the north of England and Scotland.
The club volunteers are very grateful to the Local Network Fund and County Durham Foundation for supporting the project. Over seventy bikes have been donated to the project so far by members of the community.
Youngsters from the club will learn how to service and repair their bikes, whilst at the same time learning new bicycle maintenance skills.
Starting sometime in April the cycles will be made available to club members and other young people from Shildon. Club founder John Cutting commented,
“The Pilgrim Club has all the necessary equipment and volunteers hold nationally recognised qualifications to provide cycling activities. We now intend to use some of these bikes to provide family cycling days out, taking up to six family members for a full or half a days cycling in Hamsterley, Chopwell Forests or even the Lake District”.
So far 8 young people from the club have volunteered to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition section using cycles as their chosen means of transport. This involves them planning, organising and taking part in a two-day overnight expedition. The young people will have to learn map reading, camp craft, cycle repair and maintenance and safe on and off-road cycling skills.
The funding has also secured their participation in this activity. “Thank you to all those who have donated a bike,” says Mr Cutting.
The Club is still accepting donations of unwanted bikes, in whatever state of repair and donors should ring 01388 605 711 or 01388 779 476.
