Message in a Bottle
Lifesaving message in a bottle

The aim of the scheme, set up by Age Concern, is to save lives of those taken ill in their own home and to save valuable time (and money) for the Emergency Services, hospitals and doctors.

The idea has been widely used in Australia and in other parts of the UK. It enables elderly residents to provide information in relation to their name, carer details, medical details, special medical needs, medication information and nearest contact person via a plastic bottle stored in the fridge (the fridge was chosen as reports from the fire brigade showed that the contents of fridges were often still intact after most house fires). A sticker placed on the fridge door enables emergency services to know that the vital information they may need to save a life is available in the fridge.

We gave out over £14,000 to Age Concern groups in Sedgefield, Easington, Durham Dales, and Derwentside so they could participate in this scheme.

Each Age Concern group received 8,000 bottles to distribute amongst the most vulnerable elderly residents of their area. Not only do these bottles save lives, they also provide a sense of security and peace of mind for elderly people living alone.
