Martin Landers And The Redhall Partnership

Martin Landers Martin is thirty-eight years of age and is employed by Firthmoor & District Community Association as Community Centre Development Manager. This role involves the general day-to-day facilities management of the centre, raising funding to support the centre and its staff, and ensuring the delivery and development of the services the centre provides. The centre is a thriving community resource providing a wide range of community-led activities. Although a position of responsibility, the job is low waged and Martin is married with four children.

Martin Landers received £1,000 to undertake the Common Purpose Training Programme to enhance and develop his management and leadership skills.

Martin's employers are committed to his development and have supported him in achieving a Level 4 qualification with the Chartered Institute of Management. The Common Purpose training which Martin can now undertake will enhance his abilities as a Manager and Leader as well as add a new dimension to the way in which he deals with people. The training will be beneficial to both Martin and his employers.

Martin Landers with some youths

We first encountered Martin five years ago when he stepped in to become the new (and inexperienced) Chairman of a new Partnership on the Redhall Estate in Darlington. He was a highly dedicated volunteer who took on a very difficult role at Red Hall that no-one else was willing to tackle. County Durham Foundation worked in Redhall Estate, one of the most deprived areas in Darlington before anyone else paid the area any attention. We worked closely with local residents (supported by funds from the Community Development Foundation) and helped them to set up new community organisations and raise funds to convert the school into a community centre. The activity was so successful that the Estate was adopted by other funders and subsequently attracted significant statutory funding. The Partnership (of which Martin is still voluntary Chairman) is still going strong. As such we are very pleased to be able to help Martin develop his current career to the highest level possible.

Martin contacted us to explain exactly how much our support has meant, especially to the younger generation of Redhall:

“Thanks to you we have been able to offer opportunities that these children and young people would never have encountered.”
