High Grange Village Association

The High Grange Village Association was established in 1999 with the aim to promote the welfare of the residents of High Grange and to improve community facilities within the village. Their main project was the redevelopment of an area of land, formerly an industrial site, to provide a safe playing/social area for the residents in the village. The Green Lane site has, following significant redevelopment, become the focal point of village activity.

Local children took a lead in securing and clearing the land and decided that they would like a butterfly garden and seating area as a permanent feature for the village to enjoy.

The group were awarded £5,000 to excavate and prepare the site plus to plant native trees, shrubs and wetland grasses.

Residents of the village have been delighted with the changes. The site is fully accessible to all and additional features have been incorporated such as a sensory garden that will enable all the community to enjoy the facility. It has become a communal space for residents of all ages to congregate. The garden is now used to host numerous community events including Bonfire Night Parties and Christmas Fayres.

The group has achieved an incredible amount in developing this area of land. Not only have they been closely involved in designing and planning of the project, they also project managed the purchase of the land, the excavation of the site and the events management to increase revenue. This is a very small village, with only sixty households involved in the project. The funding has helped them to achieve their aim of having a community space available for use and has brought the community together in this very successful project.

“This project has relied very much on the goodwill and confidence of other people. Without this help we would not have been able to achieve what we have. Thank you County Durham Foundation for making this happen.”
