Esteem Through Sport

The Girls Basketball Team with their coaches
“Thank you. We have gained the young people’s respect
we’ve built excellent rapports with them”

Esteem Through Sport was established in September 2004, offering young people in the northeast the opportunity to participate in sporting activities based mainly around basketball. The emphasis of the project is not on sporting ability but about raising self-esteem, morale and participation, whilst simultaneously focusing on fun. This is done through esteem building activities and concentration drills. Importantly they provide opportunities for children and young people to access an activity that would otherwise be unaffordable or unavailable to them.

“It’s really good fun … and it keeps you fit at the same time!”

The organisation is entirely volunteer-led. Activities are delivered to a very high standard by 8 management committee members, 2 volunteer coaches (both ex pro basketball players), 10 millennium volunteers and a team of parent volunteers. They currently deliver 25 sessions per week in approximately 70 venues, including Pelton Roseberry Community College, which is renowned for its community sport facilities.

County Durham Foundation has supported this organisation with 3 grants, totalling £10,000 for the initial pilot of the project and equipment and coaching skills.

These funds enabled the organisation to introduce this pioneering coaching technique, which has been a phenomenal success, and helped establish Esteem Through Sport as a reputable service provider within the county.

With the help of their dedicated volunteers, this excellent organisation successfully delivered the pilot project and made strong links throughout the county. As a result demand for their programme is increasing at a continuous rate and they have recently been approached by other agencies interested in their programmes, including the local prison service. The organisation are now looking to have their activity programme accredited in the near future.
