"The grant has helped us enormously, we are very grateful for this. We have been able to move to new premises where we have more room for furniture. This scheme helps a lot of vulnerable people in the community when they need help. This service has helped us when we needed help. The grant has made a tremendous difference to us as we can now give people a choice of furniture and a chance to view furniture. Having this grant has been fantastic for us."
The County Durham Furniture Help Scheme has been running since February 2004
from a lock up garage, surviving mainly on grants from Social Services for
individual cases, it is the only such scheme in the Sedgefield area.
The scheme is run by volunteers, some of whom have disabilities. Social
Services are regular users of the scheme for their clients and are keen to
see the project develop. The scheme benefits the environment, by reducing
the level of serviceable furniture and household goods being destroyed or
sent to landfill sites. They provide free or for a small donation, furniture
and household goods to those people who are on low income or in receipt of
benefits.
The group were given a grant of £5000 to set up the scheme and cover basic costs for the first year, including public liability insurance, premises rental, vehicle rental, telephone, cleaning materials and equipment.
