Bullion Hall Tea Dance

Two elderly ladies dancing “I love coming here. It’s a little bit of exercise; I’ve got a heart complaint so I can take it at my own pace.”

Bullion Hall Tea Dance in Chester-le-Street enables older people, most of whom are widowed to meet, socialise and dance every Monday afternoon. There are over 24 members who attend regularly, aged between 65 and 84 years old. Bullion Hall is a local, refurbished community building which provides excellent facilities for all members of the community.

The tea dance gives older people the opportunity to socialise and exercise whilst maintaining a sense of community. In many instances this is the only contact that members of the group have with their friends.

The group were awarded £350 toward the purchase of a new CD player, CDs and also for the cost of room hire at the Hall.

An elderly pair dancingThis funding has enabled this small group to continue to provide an interesting and essential resource to its members. By providing this, older people have a safe and interesting place to exercise and socialise. The group members are given access to many of the facilities at the Hall, which encourages further participation in community events and provides a range of social activities that reduce isolation for the elderly.

The group became so encouraged by the numbers of people attending the tea dance that they have organised other dances at venues around the district. Some members now attend dances up to three times per week.

“I have written to the County Durham Foundation to thank them. We are very grateful. We enjoy the dancing so much. Thank you.”
