Auckland Stroke Club“This is the only chance that some have to get across the front door. We all enjoy the gossip….there are no secrets in here!”
Auckland Stroke Club meets each Tuesday afternoon during school term times at the Holyoake Communal Hall in South Pelaw, on the outskirts of the town centre in Chester-le-Street. The facilities are clean, bright and ideal for the requirements of the organisation. The meetings provide a rare opportunity for social interaction in a relaxed setting for the club’s members, all of whom are stroke victims. Weekly activities include: bingo, quizzes, crosswords, information sharing, armchair exercises and dominoes. Equipment such as whiteboards are available and are used regularly by members.
The range of activities for members is limited due to their mobility, however they all participate fully in the group activities. Several members commented on the companionship that the Club provided for them.
A grant of £790 funded a series of guest speakers to explore healthcare after a stroke and also to meet the costs of transport, holistic therapy sessions and out-of-pocket expenses for a 40 week period.
For the members of this club, who are all aged between 60-80 years, isolation is prevalent and the Club provides the opportunity to meet, chat and participate in worthwhile group activities. Funding for transport costs was especially important to the club as all members now have the reassurance that they are collected from and returned to their home address.
“The grant has given us the chance to add variety to our meetings and give us something new to look forward to.”
