Youth Connection Theatre
The Youth Connection Theatre Company is an amateur theatre group based just outside of Chester-le-Street. The company was formed 22 years ago, from senior students, past students and other members of the community. Today the group still has the same aims; to enable as many young people as possible to experience a wide variety of drama, and have fun along the way.
Young people are involved with the management committee and the decision making process. The group is inclusive in its ethos, catering for all young people interested in taking part, including those with learning and other disabilities. Youth Connection offers opportunities for young people of ten years and over to gain or develop an interest in all aspects of drama and theatre, by working on signing, dancing, acting, and technical work which culminates in the young people performing in concerts and full scale productions.
To date they have performed in a number of impressive venues including the Edinburgh Festival, the International Drama Festival and performances at several major professional London Theatres including, the Royal National.
Their lengthy list of past productions includes Chess, Jekyll and Hyde the Musical, Les Miserables and Little Shop of Horrors.
We recently gave them £7,000 towards a production called 'A Slice of Saturday Night' which aimed to get young people involved in every stage of a theatre production including set design, dancing, acting and technical work.
This application is seeking funding to enable the group to undertake a project to perform a seventies musical entitled A Slice of Saturday Night. The group would like to provide a series of workshops where the children and young people will learn about the culture of the era. The children and young people will also take part in workshops focusing on dance, the design and making of costumes, sets and props for the production as well as choreography and performance. They will also be responsible for publicity and the operation of lighting and sound at the actual performance. The final production will take place at the Roseberry Sports and Community College where the group are based, then they will take the production on tour around community centres in the local area. The group are based in an area of high deprivation and unemployment, there are limited opportunities for young people to participate in high quality theatre and arts activities in the district. The group expect at least fifty young people between the age of 10 and 25 to benefit from the project.
