A Slice of Saturday night performed by members of the Youth Connection Theatre

Youth Connection Theatre

The Youth Connection Theatre Company is an amateur theatre group based just outside of Chester-le-Street. The company was formed 22 years ago, from senior students, past students and other members of the community. Today the group still has the same aim; to enable as many young people as possible to experience a wide variety of drama, and have fun along the way.

Youth Connection offers opportunities for young people of ten years and over to gain or develop an interest in all aspects of drama and theatre. Young people are involved with both the management committee and the decision making process. The group caters for all young people, including those with learning and other disabilities.

To date they have performed in a number of impressive venues including the Edinburgh Festival, the International Drama Festival and performances at several major professional London Theatres including, the Royal National. Their list of past productions includes Chess, Jekyll and Hyde the Musical, Les Miserables and Little Shop of Horrors.

The group recently received £7,000 from Four Acre Trust to undertake a project which allowed children to perform in an exciting and vibrant seventies musical entitled 'A Slice of Saturday Night'.

The project aimed to get children and young people involved in every stage of a theatre production. In preparation the children and young people took part in a series of workshops focusing on design, lighting, sound, sets, props and costume making, in addition to those focusing on choreography and performance. The young people also attended a special workshop to teach them about the culture of the Seventies.

The final production took place at the Roseberry Sports and Community College, Chester-le-Street. Due to popular demand Youth Connection are now taking the production on tour around other local community centres.

At least fifty young people between the age of 10 and 25 have benefitted from this project.
