St Nicholas Adventure Camps organise residential adventure activity weekends for young people living in County Durham. The camps include activities such as sailing, kayaking, canoeing, cycling, hill walking, orienteering and rock climbing as well as games and expeditions. The group's aim is to expand the children's horizons by encouraging them to meet and mix with young people from different backgrounds and by taking part in group activities which will help them overcome personal challenges and fears.
By
providing opportunities to take part in such activities, especially in a residential
environment, young people have the chance to gain skills valuable in their
everyday and future life. These include making friends, mixing with children
from other communities, teamwork and being introduced to sport or activity
that they can develop in later life.
With our help St Nicholas Adventure Camps were able to run two residential adventure weekends to Derwentwater and Coniston in the Lake District for 48 disadvantaged children.
The camps included a variety of outdoor activities as well as being trained in rescue boat procedures and some of the young people who attended came from deprived areas in County Durham such as Esh Winning and Spennymoor.
Mike Urwin who is the group's chairman commented ‘I would again like to thank you and the CDF for the support provided. We would not have been able to run our two major camps without this support.’
Some of the children who attended also got in touch to say how much they enjoyed the weekend;
'I loved Kayaking today it was amazing. My friend Lizzie capsized three times and Jenny once. It was really fun I would definitely do it again!'
'It was absolutely amazing there was a race course which I got
the fastest time on. There also was a zip line which was very good and fast.
There was also a wobbly bridge which made you feel like you were always going
to fall off!'
