Durham Chinese School

Learning Chinese letteringThere is a relatively large Chinese population in Durham who are often marginalized by way of language, culture and social circumstances. Durham Chinese School aims to enhance social inclusion and integration of Chinese people to the wider community and provide a firm grounding in culture and language.

The school aspires to be easily accessible to not only ethnic Chinese people living in Durham but to those people living in County Durham who have an interest in the Chinese culture.

The School received a grant from County Durham Foundation to fund a series of open days, traditional cultural festivals and themed workshops including healthy eating, exercise, music and drama and a Chinese New Year event. The project encouraged over 1,450 children and young people living in County Durham to learn about Chinese culture and traditions, establish healthy eating habits and learn new skills. Those taking part were given access to professional artists, use of workshops to promote team spirit and were able to build their confidence by the taking part in public performances and activities.

Dr Yan Liu Head Teacher of the school commented:

"The grant enabled the group to share Chinese traditions and culture with the wider community. It has also enabled members of the Chinese community to become more confident and participate more fully in the social and cultural environment in which they live."
