Carrot Club

With County Durham Foundation's help, the Carrot Club were able to organise a children's luncheon club where children are encouraged to grow, identify, prepare and eat food aided by their parents and a professional tutor.

After consulting parents in the area the group decided that they would like to set up a group based around developing a healthy lifestyle for their children. The inspiration for the Carrot club came from the widespread publicity of childrens diets and a lack of facilities in their local area. As the group did not qualify for any other funding, County Durham Foundation was their last resort.

The children were given a small patch of land at the back of Bishop Middleham Village Hall to plant different types of vegetables and with our funding the Club project has given both children and their parents the opportunity to learn about food, its sources and how to make healthy meals.

The group received a grant of £12,000 over two years for their children's luncheon club and the funding helped pay for the initial costs, including equipment such as high chairs for babies and small children, crockery, cutlery, pans and other cooking utensils. Since receiving the grant, the Club has given local families the opportunity to make their own contribution to help deal with the issue of children’s diets and the project has helped parents to increase their confidence and develop new skills whilst encouraging their children to develop a healthy lifestyle.
