Both Anne and Audrey received grants from the John T Shuttleworth Memorial Fund which gives grants to ill, elderly or disabled individuals and their carers in Tees Valley who are in need of respite care following hospitalisation, bereavement or because of dependency treatment.

Because of the grant, Audrey who lives in Guisborough with her husband (for whom she is 24 hour carer) was able to have a relaxing break with her friend Anne who is also carer for her husband. Anne and Audrey sent a letter to County Durham Foundation to let us know what a wonderful time they had:
"A resounding thank you for the superb holiday we had in Tenerife. We stayed in a place called Silencio which was very aptly named. It was so peaceful and restful. The first couple of days we slept a lot our bodies recharging, then after that we took short walks and long sits. "
.

The idea for the holiday came about when Anne (pictured above left with Audrey) was offered the use of a friend's apartment in Tenerife for one week in June. Having not had a holiday (or break from her role as carer) for some years, she was understandably keen to take up the offer, as was Audrey who had not been away for three years. After receiving help from the fund, the holiday was booked and once they arrived the ladies enjoyed short walks along the beach and entertainment including flamenco dancing. They were able to relax and not worry about money or their caring roles.
Just not having to watch the clock and being able to do what they wanted without having to worry about the cost was a holiday in itself. They returned home to their caring role relaxed and refreshed.
"Without your grant we would not have had the relaxed break we had. There was absolutely no money worries at all and that was a first for both of us."
Anne Mason and Audrey Herring.
